As global energy transition accelerates, large-scale Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) are experiencing explosive growth as core infrastructure for new energy grid peak shaving and frequency regulation. In BESS Power Conversion Systems (PCS), Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC) design directly determines system efficiency, lifespan, and safety. Flat wire common mode chokes, as core EMI filtering devices, play an indispensable role in BESS applications.
BESS power density continues to increase. For 100kW~500kW commercial and industrial energy storage cabinets, DC-AC inverter switching frequencies typically range from 8kHz to 20kHz, with SiC/GaN devices pushing switching frequencies above 100kHz. High-frequency switching generates common mode noise that, if not suppressed, couples through system grounding loops to the power grid, affecting other grid-connected equipment while accelerating thermal failure of DC-Link capacitors and IGBT/SiC modules.
Key EMC challenges in BESS systems:
Traditional round-wire common mode chokes face severe skin effect, poor heat dissipation, and high saturation risk in high-power BESS applications. SQ and UC series flat wire common mode chokes, wound with flat copper wire (tinned copper flat wire), fundamentally improve the above defects:
| Characteristic | Round Wire CM Choke | Flat Wire CM Choke (SQ/UC Series) |
|---|
| Fill factor | 60%~65% | 85%~92% |
|---|---|---|
| DC Resistance (DCR) | Higher | Reduced by 20%~35% |
| Thermal dissipation | Moderate | Excellent, suitable for high current |
| High-frequency performance (>1MHz) | Poor, severe skin effect | Excellent, adequate skin depth |
| Saturation current (Isat) | Lower | Increased by 30%~50% |
| Leakage inductance control | Difficult | Precisely controllable |
At the DC-DC boost converter input between battery strings and DC-Link, flat wire common mode chokes combined with X and Y capacitors form a T-type EMI filter, effectively suppressing battery-side conducted interference from entering the inverter. Per EN 61000-6-2 and EN 55011 Class A standards, common mode chokes are core devices for meeting limits.
Recommended specifications: UC series (through-hole), inductance 4.7mH~22mH, rated current 10A~30A, DCR ≤ 5mΩ
At the inverter AC output side, common mode chokes suppress switching harmonics conducted to the grid, reducing system THD while suppressing high-frequency common mode voltage impact on motor loads.
Parallel flat wire common mode chokes across DC-Link capacitor arrays suppress resonance between capacitor arrays and power switches, improving system dynamic response characteristics.
| Parameter | Typical Requirement | Notes |
